When publisher David Campbell acquired the rights to the traditional English publisher “Everyman’s Library” at the end of the 1980s, he wanted to breathe new life into an old idea. The publishing house was founded in England at the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of giving people of all classes access to world literature through high circulation and affordable prices. It is no question today that the attempt to provide broad sections of the population with high-quality classics by Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy and Leo Tolstoy, which began over 30 years ago, was most successful. In the past three decades, more than 700 titles with a total circulation of 25 million copies have been published – all as thread sewn hardcovers and with cloth binding, all by GGP Media, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann Marketing Services headquartered in Pößneck in Thuringia. For this special occasion, Campbell and three colleagues recently visited GGP Media.
